How to Overcome Mockery and Hindrances

Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem

“Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.  I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.  But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. “What is this you are doing?” they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?” I answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.” Neh.2:17-20 (NIV)

The dread of mockery has bobbed the world of the contributions of many people all through the ages. The great inventions that we have today are products of courage, creativity and bravery. They are Victories against mockery.

There are people, who are always around to tell you that you are not good enough; they laugh at you when you start to do exercises, diet or promote safe driving habits that could save your life and that of others but the truth is that you can do anything whether it is stopping to smoke or achieving a record breaking feat; you should disregard people who belittle your efforts or attempt to derail you. They are cruel mockers and in most cases they have stopped people with their treacherous mockery. Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab made dangerous attempts to stop Nehemiah using mockery, hate and physical attacks.

“Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall. So he burned with anger. He became very upset. He made fun of the Jews. He spoke to his friends and the army of Samaria. He said, “What are those Jews trying to do? Can they make their city wall like new again? Will they offer sacrifices? Can they finish everything in a single day? The stones from their city wall and buildings are piled up like trash. And everything has been badly burned. Can they use those stones to rebuild everything again?” Tobiah from Ammon was at Sanballat’s side. He said, “What are they building? They’re putting up a stone wall. But suppose a fox climbs on top of it. Even that will break it down!” Neh.4:1-3 (NIRV)

Sometimes these people step up to take physical actions to stop you like they did to Nehemiah and the Israelites. But Sanballat and Tobiah heard that Jerusalem’s walls continued to be repaired. The Arabs and some people from Ammon heard the same thing. Some men from Ashdod heard about it too. They heard that the gaps in the wall were being filled in. So they burned with anger. All of them made evil plans to come and fight against Jerusalem. They wanted to stir up trouble against it.Neh.4:7-8 (NIRV).

What should be your attitude to these people, their bad words and manners? Pray, be courageous and keep focussed.

I answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.” Neh.2:20 (NIRV)

I prayed to God. I said, “Our God, please listen to our prayer. Some people hate us. They’re making fun of us. So let others make fun of them. Let them be carried off like stolen goods. Let them be taken to another country as prisoners. Don’t hide your eyes from their guilt. Don’t forgive their sins. They have made fun of the builders.” So we rebuilt the wall. We repaired it until all of it was half as high as we wanted it to be. The people worked with all their heart.” “But we prayed to our God. We put guards on duty day and night to watch out for danger.” Neh.4:4-6, 9 (NIRV)

Nehemiah confronted them with his prayers, trust in God and confession. He prayed and continued his project. In the same way, you must:

  1. Let God be your source of strength and your recourse for help.
  2. Confess your faith and draw strength from the word of God.
  3. You must know that many other achievers had the same trials and overcame them.
  4. You must not surrender your initiatives. You are not responsible to them.
  5. Stay away from people who mock and undermine you, people who constantly trample on your self-esteem. They are horrible destroyers. It doesn’t matter who they are. God doesn’t want you to be treated that way.

How strong God is! He despises no one; there is nothing he doesn’t understand. He does not let sinners live on, and he always treats the poor with justice. He protects those who are righteous; he allows them to rule like kings and lets them be honored forever” Job 36:5-7 (GNT)

These are same people who will be first called when you succeed; they come around to enjoy the fruit of your labour. They will tell you “we know you are going to make it”. They are profuse liars whose words should not be regarded.

Don’t be trapped by cruel mockery and people who delight in them. You must be careful; there are times when people indulge in this evil without knowing exactly the harm they are doing. This does not reduce the danger it causes. You must learn to define your purpose and diligently pursue it.

Power for productivity and prosperity

I am sure you want to know what this power is and I am very sure it works wonders. It will work for anyone who is willing to try it. It does not cost much and I am handing it over to you for free. Enjoy it.

Who we are is a combination of things that are not actually far from us. We are products of our choices, the information available to us, the actions and risks we are willing to take. It is very important that we pay very close attention to these things.

It is very vital that we take the pains to process the information available to us. Today, we have unlimited access to a lot of information. You can get information directly from people; these include teachers, mentors, lectures and seminars. You can also get your information through books (this is hard for many people), internet, reports, TV, Radio etc. I know that getting information might be easier in some parts of the world than others but please be diligent in getting information.

It is not enough to get information, it is extremely important that you process the information with diligence and “pains”. The book of Joshua 1:8 tells us how we can do this, it says, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (ESV)

This is article suggests that you see the word “law” used in this quote as “vital information”.

Keep the information you gathered where you can reach them easily. You should analyse them very carefully and constantly.

Processing information cannot be over emphasised; do it thoroughly and positively consider all options and possibilities; write down the action points. You may need to research for additional information if need be.

Many people don’t process information well; often they want someone to hand them “blue prints” of success from the blues. Often times “blue prints” are written in black and white. There seems to be little alternatives to studying. You have to study (learn) one way or the other. Don’t wait to learn from a disastrous failure if you have opportunity to learn ahead.

The next thing after processing your information is action. The scriptures say in James 1:22-25, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”

Put what you learnt to work. No matter what information you have, you cannot make any profit from them until you take concrete actions on them. You don’t have to wait to know everything before you set out to work. You can learn as you work. Many people are forever procrastinating. Some encourage this weakness by claiming to be perfectionist. Please, I have heard so much of this that it makes me sick. (The first cars were not the way we have them today and that goes with a lot of things). Do something about your dream.

Repeat and practise. You must be willing to practise and repeat the process until you get things running. The more you do a thing the more you improve on how to do it excellently; (Learn from footballers, sports people and musicians).  Don’t give up, even the best footballers miss passes and goal opportunities.

You must stay focussed. You must be focussed on your line of action. We are not called to do everything. Settle on the things you can do best and put in your best on doing them. It is not wisdom to drift from one thing to another. You might have observed that there are people who have made a lot of money making jokes. I read of one person who made millions making pants. The scriptures say,

“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.” I Cor. 9:25-26(NIV)

Stay positive. You must have confidence in yourself. You must trust God to help you. Someone once said that it is “only grave diggers that start from the top” and of course go down. Dr. Robert Schuller, an American televangelist, pastor and motivational speaker, titled one of his books “Tough Times Never Lasts but Tough People Do”

Learn to sell yourself. Let other people know what you are doing. Do what you have chosen to do and let people buy into it. You can get the book “How Much is Your Business Worth? You may find it useful. What is your effort worth, if people are to pay for it? People will pay for things that are of value to them even if it is just to make them laugh. Be delighted with what you do.

You must learn to persevere. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to get a breakthrough. It takes time to build trust. Be patient some of the businesses you compare yourself with have been there for long; those that are not are running their course in life, run yours.

Learn to tolerate opposition. You will encounter opposition but learn how to handle those who oppose you. Sometimes you are better off if you ignore them.

Learn to acknowledge God in all your plans. James 4:13-16 days, “ Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.” (NIV)

Proverbs 3:5-8, says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. (NIV)

Deuteronomy 8:18 says, ““And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” (NKJV)

Don’t forget that “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.” Prov.10:22 (NIV)

Seek for the right tools for your work. “Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox come abundant harvests.” Prov. 14:4” (NIV). Where and when possible consult experts. This includes reading and getting useful information all the way.

You must treat your customers well and do your business with integrity. The scripture says, “The Lord hates people who use dishonest scales. He is happy with honest weights.” Prov. 11:1 (GNT)

Prayer is a vital key to productivity and prosperity. Psalm 34:10 says, “The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing(NKJV). Also, we are told in Psalm 37:4-5, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this” (NIV)

And lastly, this is important and you will do well if you put it to work.

“Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10 (NKJV)

Stay blessed.

“Salvation” is by Grace – Not Works!

“But God’s mercy is so abundant, and his love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience he brought us to life with Christ. It is by God’s grace that you have been saved. In our union with Christ Jesus he raised us up with him to rule with him in the heavenly world. He did this to demonstrate for all time to come the extraordinary greatness of his grace in the love he showed us in Christ Jesus. For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, but God’s gift, so that no one can boast about it. God has made us what we are, and in our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do”. Eph.2:4-10 (GNT)

I feel strongly led to share the scripture quoted above with you. I have had a confirmation already about this. Please take your time to enjoy the grace of God.

There are many people who are bound to works trying to please God and seeking a nod from men. Some do it to buy favour from God. They have been told that the more they give the more they will get from God; the more they work, the more they are approved by God and a lot of that goes today.

Please I don’t a misgiving about giving and about serving God. God approves of that and blesses those who do but it must be done with the right motives and with the right perspective. They must not be done as a way to put God on the spot, which is, buying favour.

We are saved by grace not by works. These were the issues Martin Luther and others fought against when they discovered the truth but they have found their way back to the “holy places” and nobody dares speak out against those practises because they don’t want to be thrown out of “church”.

“You can never buy yourself back”. Salvation is by faith and the blessing of are freely given and received by faith.

I believe in the scriptures above service to God, giving, sowing seed and tithing. However, the fact that people have taken “advantage” of God and people in this matter is as clear as daylight.

I believer in serving God and I have devoted my life doing it; but it must be done with reverence. I equally know that there are people who despise people who work for God, according to them “why should they pay someone to preach the Bible”, after all, we all went to school. Meanwhile they are desperate to collect tithes which are actually means that God put in place to cater for those working for him on full time. (Check it up).

Love, grace and faith are the ways to relate to him in our walk with him and in our work for him. You will find peace with God when you do this and expect fight with men who want to continue the “Adam’s way” – leaves for cover (Genesis 3:7) “As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves.”
